Essay #6

                                                                       Surprised;
An Essay About the Kids Being Astonished

                                                                An Essay by Hanna Rose
                                                                           11.1.10

                                                                           English 8b

Jem and Scout are so shocked when Atticus picks up a rifle and shot the mad dog on his first try.The children don't know what to think, they are wondering why Atticus didn't tell them. They also wonder why he has never taught them how to shoot. Scout and Jem are astonished when this happens.

TS Scout and Jem were surprised to find out how skilled Atticus was with a rifle. SD Scout and Jem, after seeing Atticus shoot the dog, were shocked because they didn't know how good he was at shooting. CM To Scout's bewilderment,  Atticus never told his children about his talent with a rifle. CM Jem told Scout, " maybe it just slipped his (Atticus) mind" but Scout did not think much of that. CM Atticus had decided that he would never pick a gun up again. SD He thought that "God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things." CM According to Miss Maudie, " he (Atticus) decided he (Atticus) wouldn't shoot till he(Atticus) had to, and he (Atticus) had to today".  CM I think Atticus settled on the idea of not shooting until he had to, because he wanted to treat everything on earth equal. CS I strongly believe that he thinks that everything and everyone has a right to live, and shooting for sport is not something the Atticus considered right.

TS Parents do things that surprise you, and you find new things out about that them that you didn't no everyday. SD Once I was looking through a photo album in our house and there was a news paper clipping. CM I read it and the article was about my dad saving a mans life. CM While he was driving the ferry boat from New London to New York. CM I didn't no about this and when I ask my dad he said that the man's boat had flipped in the middle of the ocean. CM My dad told me that it took him three tries to maneuver the large catamaran to send out a life buoy to the cold, wet man. SD I thought about how my dad was just doing his job and it was a miracle that he heard the man scream " help, please, help." If my dad had not heard it the man would be dead. CS I learned that he could have just kept on driving the ferry so he could make it to the dock on time and not look out the window, but he took the time to look and to save the mans life, and that man was very great-full.

I think that surprises can be good or bad. Jem and Scout learned something new about their father, that they were not expecting. I also discovered something about my dad that I was not expecting. I think that being surprised is a part of life, learning new things, and there's always something new to look forward too because you never know what's going to happen next.

Essay #5

                                                                                                 Crying
                                                                                         Is Not a Weakness

People cry about many different things. They cry because they are happy, sad, overwhelmed or in pain. Most people associate crying as sadness, but it is not always heartbreaking. I do not think that crying is always a sign of misery. It can also be a sign that you are scared or overly excited.

TS Crying is not a weakness; but some people are embarrassed to cry. SD I think Jem was crying because someone had filled the knothole with cement. CM1 This seemed to really bother Jem; it bothered him so much because he thought that Boo was filling the knothole with presents. CM2 Jem did not feel it was fair that Nathan Radley filled it up with cement because he was cutting off any connection that Boo had to the outside world. SD2 Jem was hiding himself from crying in front of Scout  "but I (Scout) thought it odd that I (Scout) did not hear him." CM Jem probably assumed that everyone else judged it as a big deal ,and as bad as he felt he did not want people to know that he had been crying. CM2 Jem was crying for a long enough time that his eyes were red ,and "his face was dirty in the right places." CS Jem is scared to show people that he was crying because he thinks it is a personal flaw.

TS: People cry for so many reasons. SD: Is it okay to cry? CM: I think that it is fine to cry; I do not think it's a weakness, it's just an emotion. CM: Not everyone feels that way though, and so they hide their feelings. SD: One specific memory I have of crying is when my parents told me that my mom had breast cancer. CM: I cried for many reasons and  many thoughts jumped through my head. CM I was overwhelmed with emotion. CM The first thing that went through my head was losing her and what was going to happen. CS: Although people cry and it is usually a sad thing, it is not always a bad thing.

Crying is great way to let out your emotions. If people are ashamed of crying, they will never be able to let go of their insecurities and problems. When people cry they are usually embarrassed and they tend to cry in a place where few people can see them. Crying is not a horrible thing to do, it does not show that you are weak; it simply shows that you have feelings that need to be expressed.

Self Assessment-
1.) One of my strong points is probably the second chunk in the second paragraph it was a easy thing to write about because it actually happened to me. I think that it flows with elegance very well.
2.) One weak point is probably the first paragraph. I Think i can work harder on the first sentence.
3.) One thing I'm working on is transitions between paragraphs. I think that it will help my writing a lot.
4.) On this essay about Crying i would give myself a B+, I feel that i worked very hard on it and polished it to make it perfect. I also feel that there is a lot of good writing in the paragraphs.

You have a blank piece of paper, then the you lay your bristled black and brown paint brush on the crisp white paper. The brush is soaked in  the color sky blue and you slightly skim the brush on the paper and the page comes alive. All the sudden there's oranges and reds, blues and greens, flying across the less than white paper. This paper is filled with emotion and feelings, pinks and purples and circles and lines. This is no ordanary crisp white paper anymore it's a one of a kinda painting.

Trespassing
  Or Being Curious

An Essay by Hanna Rose
9th grade  English B

Have you ever thought about going onto some one's land and looking through their windows? Well it's illegal and in this chapter Scout and Jem go onto the Radley's property and look through their windows, hoping to see something, wishing that they could see Boo. They also cause a big commotion by sneaking around and waking up lots of neighbors. I don't think it was a good idea to go onto their property.

TS The children invade the Radley's privacy and trespass on their land, which causes lots of problems. SD They shouldn’t have gone onto the Radley’s property because it’s an invasion. CM “We crept to the side of the house,” because it's not their house Scout and Jem shouldn’t be walking so close and looking through windows.  CM It's also not nice how they touch their house, and lean against the windows. SD They are disrespectful to Boo and his brother Nathan, walking on their property and sneaking around. CM This causes lots of commotion; Nathan Radley ends up shooting a gun “ the gun shot broken across his arm.” CM They also wake up many people and disturb the neighborhood. SD The children also treat Boo Radley poorly. CM The sad thing is that they don’t even know Boo and they’re saying that he isn't a nice person. They are judging Boo before they get to know him or even see him, like judging a book by its cover.CM They are taught to be polite to all adults but in this case they treat  the Radleys very poorly and they don't care. CS The children should think about if they were the Radleys would they like people walking around and looking in their windows and invading their privacy.

I hope that they have learned from the shooting experience and never trespass on other peoples' land again. They have caused a big ruckus and disturbed lots of people especially the Radleys. Scout and Jem don't deserve to see Boo because they were on land that they weren't suppose to be on. I don't think that they meant to make this a big deal, waking up so many people, but every action has its consequences and they are definitely going to get in trouble.

Silence.

I am sitting in the library at study hall and it's pouring rain. I can hear the pitter patter of rain drops hitting the windows above me. As I look out the windows to the right, I see lots of small rain drops slowly falling and smashing onto the engraved red bricks. The green tree's leaves are being soaked with rain, and are being blown around on the fields. There are many leaves smashing into the windows around the library. Although everything is in chaos outside the beautiful building, in side it is calm, silent and comfortable. There is the sound of papers and colored pencils being moved around the table from the 5th grade class on the other side of the library. There is the sound of the clock ticking, tick. tick. tick. There is the sound of many of us typing on the Mac computers. Other than that it is silent. Thats the way the library is supposed to sound, silent, a place for people to come and read. I look over to the fire place and I am wishing that it would be filled with flames glowing red and orange so that we could sit and read. Everyone is working on homework and is content, no one is fussing or rushing or yelling its just quiet.
