Assesment: Salvation Army #1
Today I went for my first visit at the Salvation Army in New London, CT. I started to sort cloths by ages from 12 months to adults. There were many other volunteers busily walking around preparing for Christmas. Our goal was to organize the cloths so that other volunteers could walk in and pick out out fits, they then put them in bags and brought them down stairs to give to poor-family's. When I went down-stairs to hand out bags to parents waiting to reserve toys for their kids, i felt bad. I felt bad because they had close to nothing, and i had Ugg boots and a Roxy sweater on. I am so privileged to have nice clothes and food for Christmas. I learned a lot form this first visit at the Salvation Army.

ESSAY #8
A Persons Lonely Life;
Is Not Always Bad
An Essay By Hanna Kronholm
11.20.10
Loneliness is every where weather we know it or not. People are lonely for many reasons, just because there lonely doesn't mean they're sad. They may enjoy being lonely and it might not be what you are thinking, they don't have to be walking around with their head down, knowing that they are alone, wishing that they had a friend, or hoping that they had a different life. They could be very content with their life, and not want to change anything. TS Dill is a very lonely person who makes things up to get attention. SD He tells stories that didn't actually happen and has a tendency to exaggerate things so that people will pay more attention to him. CM When Dill is telling Jem and Scout how he got to Maycomb he tells them, " I discovered a small animal show. I traveled with the show." CM Scout discovers that he took a train; she apprehends that he lied and this is not the first time. Dill thinks that he would become friendless if he stopped making up stories, a boy that no one talked to, a person that was scared to be himself, a son that runs away, a
child with no stable home, one who lives with his aunt, someone who is blessed with great friends like Jem and Scout.SD You can tell when people are lonely because they are gloomy, in comparison they are trying to be something they are not. CM You can see that they are pretending to smile and laugh, almost like they are searching for happiness. CM You could have a million friends but still be lonely, if no one is there to talk to you. CS Having a lonely life has side effects; you can be lonely without even knowing it.
SD Lots of people in the world are lonely; you just might not know it. CM Sometimes when my family and I drive past homeless people on the highway, holding up signs, asking for food, wishing that they had a safe place to sleep, wondering if there was going to be a next meal, hoping that someone would care enough about them to listen, catching them when they fall, I think the people are lonely. CM I can't help but think that they are alone in this world; they must not have anyone to talk to.When no one will talk to you, you can't help but become lonely. CM They are longing to be heard by anyone that will listen. SD I haven't had many experiences when I have been lonely. CM Sometimes when I go on vacation I feel "lonely", although my family does a lot of things together we also want to do things apart. CM I often find myself alone, sitting on a hammock, reading a book, or taking a walk. CM The rest of my family are doing things that they want to do, my dad is scuba diving, my mom is watching my younger sister, and my brother is running around and making new friends. CM I don't have a problem with being "lonely" on vacation; I enjoy the separation sometimes, getting to relax and do things on my own. CS Maybe we could all try to listen to someone else, "what goes around comes around"; next time maybe someone will be there to listen to you.
Being lonely isn't something that people should fret over. If they are happy with their life and the way that they are living nothing else matters. Not even what other people say if you are truly happy than, your not lonely your sole is full of happiness not loneliness. Maybe in the end you could find peace in being lonely.

Essay #7
Growing Up
An Essay About People Maturing;
By Hanna Rose
English 8B
11.4.10
Jem and Scout are growing up and as they are growing up, they are changing. Jem is growing up, he is changing many of his old habits. He is very difficult to live with because he is irritable and bossy towards Scout. He also has a bigger appetite; “Atticus reckoned he was a tape worm”. Scout is beginning to be more independent.She wants to do things without Jem and Atticus. She doesn’t let Jem boss her around anymore. Scout’s growing into a young lady, a person who is ready to conquer the world, a girl who knows what she wants , one that will achieve a lot in her life, an individual who stands up for what she believes in, a daughter who is very respectful. Scout is becoming less of a tomboy, “you may become interested in cloths and boys-”, and she starts to think about what she looks like. Both Jem and Scout interact with each other, and it's not always in a proper way. They don't always listen to each other, siblings are not always supposed to listen to one another; fighting is only natural. They are sometimes rude to each other and don't respect each other.
I am also growing up like Jem and Scout. I have grown up in learning; I have grown as a person at Pine Point School, a school with a great learning environment, a society where everyone cares about you, a place that is actively involved in your learning, a campus with teachers that help you every step of the way. I have more knowledge than I did when I was in kindergarten when I first started Pine Point School. I am also more responsible and aware of what’s happening outside of school into the wider community. I can now babysit for little kids, caring for them while their parents are gone, spending time with them, taking the time to listen to them and play with them. As I have grown up I have developed better judgment. I make smart decisions and no what’s right and wrong. I am a lot alike Jem and Scout though. I still sometimes bicker with my younger brother and sister. As I have matured, I have learned that the less you fight and yell the less you get in trouble. Like my mom says, “Treat the person how you would like to be treated”.

Essay #6
Surprised;
An Essay About the Kids Being Astonished
An Essay by Hanna Rose
11.1.10
English 8b
Jem and Scout are so shocked when Atticus picks up a rifle and shot the mad dog on his first try.The children don't know what to think, they are wondering why Atticus didn't tell them. They also wonder why he has never taught them how to shoot. Scout and Jem are astonished when this happens.
TS Scout and Jem were surprised to find out how skilled Atticus was with a rifle. SD Scout and Jem, after seeing Atticus shoot the dog, were shocked because they didn't know how good he was at shooting. CM To Scout's bewilderment, Atticus never told his children about his talent with a rifle. CM Jem told Scout, " maybe it just slipped his (Atticus) mind" but Scout did not think much of that. CM Atticus had decided that he would never pick a gun up again. SD He thought that "God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things." CM According to Miss Maudie, " he (Atticus) decided he (Atticus) wouldn't shoot till he(Atticus) had to, and he (Atticus) had to today". CM I think Atticus settled on the idea of not shooting until he had to, because he wanted to treat everything on earth equal. CS I strongly believe that he thinks that everything and everyone has a right to live, and shooting for sport is not something the Atticus considered right.
TS Parents do things that surprise you, and you find new things out about that them that you didn't no everyday. SD Once I was looking through a photo album in our house and there was a news paper clipping. CM I read it and the article was about my dad saving a mans life. CM While he was driving the ferry boat from New London to New York. CM I didn't no about this and when I ask my dad he said that the man's boat had flipped in the middle of the ocean. CM My dad told me that it took him three tries to maneuver the large catamaran to send out a life buoy to the cold, wet man. SD I thought about how my dad was just doing his job and it was a miracle that he heard the man scream " help, please, help." If my dad had not heard it the man would be dead. CS I learned that he could have just kept on driving the ferry so he could make it to the dock on time and not look out the window, but he took the time to look and to save the mans life, and that man was very great-full.
I think that surprises can be good or bad. Jem and Scout learned something new about their father, that they were not expecting. I also discovered something about my dad that I was not expecting. I think that being surprised is a part of life, learning new things, and there's always something new to look forward too because you never know what's going to happen next.

3.) One thing I'm working on is transitions between paragraphs. I think that it will help my writing a lot.

Is Not a Weakness
An Essay by Hanna Rose
October 14, 2010
English 8b

People cry about many different things. They cry because they are happy, sad, overwhelmed or in pain. Most people associate crying as sadness, but it is not always heartbreaking. I do not think that crying is always a sign of misery. It can also be a sign that you are scared or overly excited.
TS Crying is not a weakness; but some people are embarrassed to cry. SD I think Jem was crying because someone had filled the knothole with cement. CM1 This seemed to really bother Jem; it bothered him so much because he thought that Boo was filling the knothole with presents. CM2 Jem did not feel it was fair that Nathan Radley filled it up with cement because he was cutting off any connection that Boo had to the outside world. SD2 Jem was hiding himself from crying in front of Scout "but I (Scout) thought it odd that I (Scout) did not hear him." CM Jem probably assumed that everyone else judged it as a big deal ,and as bad as he felt he did not want people to know that he had been crying. CM2 Jem was crying for a long enough time that his eyes were red ,and "his face was dirty in the right places." CS Jem is scared to show people that he was crying because he thinks it is a personal flaw.
TS: People cry for so many reasons. SD: Is it okay to cry? CM: I think that it is fine to cry; I do not think it's a weakness, it's just an emotion. CM: Not everyone feels that way though, and so they hide their feelings. SD: One specific memory I have of crying is when my parents told me that my mom had breast cancer. CM: I cried for many reasons and many thoughts jumped through my head. CM I was overwhelmed with emotion. CM The first thing that went through my head was losing her and what was going to happen. CS: Although people cry and it is usually a sad thing, it is not always a bad thing.
Crying is great way to let out your emotions. If people are ashamed of crying, they will never be able to let go of their insecurities and problems. When people cry they are usually embarrassed and they tend to cry in a place where few people can see them. Crying is not a horrible thing to do, it does not show that you are weak; it simply shows that you have feelings that need to be expressed.

Trespassing
Or Being Curious
An Essay by Hanna Rose

Have you ever thought about going onto some one's land and looking through their windows? Well it's illegal and in this chapter Scout and Jem go onto the Radley's property and look through their windows, hoping to see something, wishing that they could see Boo. They also cause a big commotion by sneaking around and waking up lots of neighbors. I don't think it was a good idea to go onto their property. TS The children invade the Radley's privacy and trespass on their land, which causes lots of problems. SD They shouldn’t have gone onto the Radley’s property because it’s an invasion. CM “We crept to the side of the house,” because it's not their house Scout and Jem shouldn’t be walking so close and looking through windows. CM It's also not nice how they touch their house, and lean against the windows. SD They are disrespectful to Boo and his brother Nathan, walking on their property and sneaking around. CM This causes lots of commotion; Nathan Radley ends up shooting a gun “ the gun shot broken across his arm.” CM They also wake up many people and disturb the neighborhood. SD The children also treat Boo Radley poorly. CM The sad thing is that they don’t even know Boo and they’re saying that he isn't a nice person. They are judging Boo before they get to know him or even see him, like judging a book by its cover.CM They are taught to be polite to all adults but in this case they treat the Radleys very poorly and they don't care. CS The children should think about if they were the Radleys would they like people walking around and looking in their windows and invading their privacy.
I hope that they have learned from the shooting experience and never trespass on other peoples' land again. They have caused a big ruckus and disturbed lots of people especially the Radleys. Scout and Jem don't deserve to see Boo because they were on land that they weren't suppose to be on. I don't think that they meant to make this a big deal, waking up so many people, but every action has its consequences and they are definitely going to get in trouble.

Silence.
I am sitting in the library at study hall and it's pouring rain. I can hear the pitter patter of rain drops hitting the windows above me. As I look out the windows to the right, I see lots of small rain drops slowly falling and smashing onto the engraved red bricks. The green tree's leaves are being soaked with rain, and are being blown around on the fields. There are many leaves smashing into the windows around the library. Although everything is in chaos outside the beautiful building, in side it is calm, silent and comfortable. There is the sound of papers and colored pencils being moved around the table from the 5th grade class on the other side of the library. There is the sound of the clock ticking, tick. tick. tick. There is the sound of many of us typing on the Mac computers. Other than that it is silent. Thats the way the library is supposed to sound, silent, a place for people to come and read. I look over to the fire place and I am wishing that it would be filled with flames glowing red and orange so that we could sit and read. Everyone is working on homework and is content, no one is fussing or rushing or yelling its just quiet.

This Song the "summer winds" describes my summer very well. It tells you that summer fells like its going to last forever and then you blink and its gone. To me summer is like little grains of sand slipping through my fingers and there are less and less and then its gone, and that song describes my feelings very well.
TS The summer “came blowin’ in from across the sea,” and it left just as fast. SD Once summer started it felt like it would never end, then the clock started ticking, slowly trip by trip, summer started to vanish. CM The summer winds took me over the Atlantic sea from island to island.CM I spent my summer on beautiful islands like Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island. SD Although, those August days and nights went flying by, “like a painted kite in the sky, they are still vivid in my memory.” CM The wind blew me to bon fires and to nights with smores, trips to the "secret beach" on Fisher’s Island and long boat rides around Martha’s Vineyard. CM I don’t think I could have had a better summer if I had tryed.SD Unfortunately, September and school kept creeping around the corner, each day getting closer and closer. CM I tried to push it to the back of my head, but all of the homework to come got me nervous for eight grade. CM When it came to the last days of summer reality started to kick in. CS "Mmm the summer wind" I could still feel it blow by me just as fast as the days of summer went by.
In conclustion the summer wind came and went as fast a grains of sand slipping through your fingers. Although summers over and were back at school there will be another summer and another year of school always follows it. Like a gust of wind carrying you through life.
